Black is Back! Matadero, Madrid (Nave 16). May 26 and 27, 2012

Soul is the inspiration for Levis Stubbs song “Reach Out I´ll Be There,” the force behind Otis Redding´s “Respect,” the fevered craze of Ann Peebles “I Can´t Stand the Rain,” the sweet compassion of Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions and the defiance of Swamp Dogg´s “God Bless America for What.” It is the earthy emotions, catchy choruses, jubilant songs and unforgettable music that was the soundtrack of the awakening of the African-American consciousness in the 60´s and 70´s. They were the most authentic, sincere and spontaneous sounds in the history of pop.
It´s for this reason that soul always makes a comeback, in young voices that didn´t live through its birth but share its effervescence with those original soul artists still kicking on. This is the spirit behind Black is Back, a festival born from a profound respect for the tradition and aesthetic of soul music. In its first edition it brings legendary names to our city. For the first time ever in Spain, The Impressions will play (without Curtis Mayfield, of course, but with two of the original members of the group – Fred Cash and Sam Gooden.) There´ll also be young artists currently reviving soul, like James Hunter (UK), already a legend on the scene, and the American Eli “Paperboy” Reed, as well as R&B and garage enthusiasts like Lisa Kekaula (vocalist of The Bellrays), and Spanish artists Al Supersonic & the Teenagers, Juan Zelada and Watch Out.
You´ll be transported to Beale Street in Memphis or an Alabama neighbourhood, enjoying pure soul at Black is Back in Madrid on the 26th and 27th of May.

MAIKA MAKOVSKI, NEW SINGLE “LANGUAGE”
Warner Music and Outstanding Records have the pleasure of announcing the release of the 5th studio album by Maika Makovski, entitled “Thank You for the Boots,” on the 3rd of April, 2012.
In 2011, Makovski has been one of the most active artists in the country, having written and recorded two albums, debuted as an actress in “Desaparecer” (directed by Calixto Bieto and co-starring Juan Echanove, with original songs written and performed onstage by Maika), toured internationally with the theatre production and performed around the country with her band. The total has been 75 performances in 40 cities in 4 countries, in just 6 months!
With her prize-winning band (Davis Martínez on the drums, JC Luque on the bass and percussion, and Oskar Benas on guitar and harmonies,) Makovski recorded “Thank You For the Boots” during August and September 2011.
Maika tells us that “writing “Thank You for the Boots” involved me sitting at the piano, wanting to jump off the stool and have fun playing, thinking about a truck rolling downhill and, above all, finally breathing! I´ve been writing dense, serious music for 5 years, exploring dark states of mind, but since a while ago I´ve been living through a very sweet period in my life. When the time came to write another album, I knew I had to have a good time with it. This is a luminous album (and even when it´s not, it looks for light), an album of songs with choruses and verses, all of which are about friendship, in one way or another. The boots were inherited as a present from a very good friend more than 12 years ago, and they´re still strong, worn but comfortable, still supportive from the base.
“From an early age Maika Makovski, raised in Mallorca by an Andalusian mother and Macedonian father, has gone about earning recognition for her talent, winning her first prize in 2002, even before releasing her first album. Her first two albums “Kradiaw” (PAE 2005) and “Kraj para Koferot” (Wildpunk Records, 2007) led the El Mundo newspaper to name her “the best female artist that has emerged from the current underground rock scene in years.” Her 3rd album, “Maika Makovski” (Origami Records, 2010,) produced by John Parish (PJ Harvey, Eels, Tracy Chapman) was a big step forward in her career. The newspaper El Pais described her as an “underground muse and one of the most important voices in Spanish rock.” Maika enchanted audiences on her tour of the album, which included London, New York, Chicago, Texas, Austin and the whole of Spain during 2010 and 2011. In the summer of 2011, the work of theatre “Desaparecer” debuted in the Teatre Romea de Barcelona, as part of the Festival Grec, starring Maika Makovski. The original music of the production was released on a CD (“Desaparecer, Outstanding Records, 2011) just in time for Maika´s extensive tour.
In April 2012, a new phase begins in the unstoppable ascent of Maika Makovski. “The Boots on Tour” will be a chance for audiences all around Spain to enjoy new material, beginning in Madrid and Barcelona and later internationally, in South America, the UK and the US from May to July.

JONATHAN RICHMAN SPAIN TOUR 2012
The influential veteran Jonathan Richman is back on tour in our country with an extensive list of confirmed concert dates in which Tommy Larkins will accompany him, as always, on drums. Richman started his career as the frontman of the cult band The Modern Lovers, one of the corner stones of proto-punk, though shortly after he dropped distortion to devote his life to that rock’n’roll which draws on many different influences and which he plays with acoustic backing. Some of his most famous records are “Rockin’n'Romance”, “Rock’n'roll with the Modern Lovers” and the soundtrack of “There’s Something About Mary” (film in which he appears narrating the story through his songs). His latest record is “O Moon, Queen of Night on Earth”.

THE ANSWER “REVIVAL” SPAIN TOUR 2012
They made us pump our fists in the air when they supported AC/DC on their world tour, and then left us with our pints empty when they passed through Spain on their own. Now they start 2012 with a new album and tour.
The Answer´s new collection of hard, classic rock goes by the name of “Revival” and was produced by Chris “Frenchie” Smith. Cormac Neeson, the voice of The Answer (one could almost be forgiven for calling them Led Zepellin 2) tells us:
“The studio was in the middle of the desert in El Paso, on the border of Mexico and Texas, in an amazing place for creating music, with this Wild West vibe. We had a great time and made a very hard, strong album, just like rock should be.”
After touring the world for two years with AC/DC, the guys are dying to get back to their own shows, to getting up close to their audiences and that special sweat you get from drinking rancid beer…
THE ANSWER “REVIVAL” SPANISH TOUR 2
January 11 Barcelona, La2 de Apolo.
January 12 Bilbao, Kafé Antzokia.
January 13 Madrid, Sala Caracol.
January 14 Santiago, Sala Capitol
